Candidates for Dentures

Did you know that approximately one-quarter of adults over 65 are missing all their teeth? Dentures offer a common and effective solution for tooth loss. They are designed to be so natural-looking and dependable that you may have interacted with someone who wears them without even realizing it. Are you wondering if you might be a suitable candidate for dentures?

To qualify for this restorative treatment, you should:
  • Want to replace several or all of your teeth.
  • Avoid smoking or using other tobacco products.
  • Have a healthy jawbone (we can assist with this!).
  • Not experiencing dry mouth.
  • Be committed to taking good care of your dentures at home.
  • Plan to continue visiting the dentist for regular exams, just as you would with natural teeth.

Taking care of your dentures involves regular cleanings and dental examinations. Even if your prosthetics fit perfectly, it’s essential to visit your dentist periodically. During your appointments, we will check the fit of your dentures and examine your gums, tongue, jaw, and overall oral health. We care about your complete oral health, not just your teeth.

To Care for Your Dentures at Home:
  • Remove Dentures Overnight: Take out your dentures at night to give your mouth a chance to rest.
  • Soak Dentures: Place your dentures in warm water, with or without denture cleanser.
  • Avoid Harsh Soaks: Do not soak dentures with metal clasps in anything other than warm water.
  • Keep Them Moist: When not wearing your dentures, store them in water to prevent drying out and warping.
  • Avoid Hot Water: Never soak your dentures in hot water, as it can damage them.
  • Clean Your Gums: When your dentures are removed, gently clean and massage your gums. If your toothbrush feels uncomfortable, run it under warm water or use a clean, damp cloth wrapped around your finger.
  • Brush Natural Teeth: If you have partial dentures, continue to brush your natural teeth as usual.

By following these care instructions, you can help ensure the longevity and comfort of your dentures while maintaining your oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, there are several alternatives for replacing missing teeth. Dental bridges are an effective option for restoring gaps caused by one to three missing teeth. For more extensive tooth loss, dental implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth. While dental implants typically require a higher initial investment and have specific health requirements for candidates, they offer a long-term solution for tooth restoration.

With proper care and maintenance, dentures can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years. However, it’s important to note that, in addition to the wear and tear on the dentures themselves, changes in your mouth over time may necessitate getting fitted for a new set. Regular check-ups will help ensure that your dentures continue to fit well and function effectively throughout their lifespan.

While you can wear your dentures to bed, it’s generally recommended that you don’t. Getting into the habit of removing them at night allows you to soak them while also giving your gums and jaw a chance to rest. This practice helps you clean your mouth, gums, and any remaining natural teeth effectively.

Your top dentures should create a suction against your gums, while your bottom dentures should float just above your gums but stay in place easily. Partial dentures should align with your natural teeth without much movement. If you have implant-supported dentures, they should snap securely into place and remain stable. If you’re unsure about the fit of your dentures, feel free to book an appointment so we can assess and make any necessary adjustments.

Once you’ve adjusted to your dentures, you should be able to enjoy a wide variety of foods. However, some items can be tough on your dentures or may cause irritation. It’s advisable to avoid hard or sticky foods like caramel, carrot sticks, and tough cuts of meat, as well as foods with small particles like popcorn or seeded crackers. Enjoy these foods as occasional treats to maintain your dentures’ longevity and comfort.
